IT FundamentalsThere simply is no need to feel silly about not knowing “techno-speak.” What is a WAN? What is a MAN? What does a Server do and why is it important? What does IT do other than take my computer away and while supposedly “fixing” it, seem like to break something else on it? When you talk to IT, do you feel like they are just giving you a line of techno-speak to get rid of you? If you are stymied by Information Technology, new to IT, or perhaps now have to interface and communicate with your IT department (but don’t know how), this course will provide an overview of IT Technologies, the IT Organization and Operations, and the Business of IT. We’ll use the OSI Reference Model as our basis for network architectures (LAN, WAN, MAN, Intranet, Internet, B2B, G2B, C2B, VPN, extranet, TCP-IP). Technologies reviewed will include Networks, Databases (and relationships), Servers, Applications, and Architecture (and network devices: routers, hubs, firewalls, proxy servers, DHCP, protocols, gateways). We will review IT Operations using the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) as a guide. We will also discuss boxes (from mainframe to servers to Blackberry and related operating systems). A big topic is IT management (management of … availability, security, access, incidents, change control, capacity, release, configuration, security, continuity). Finally, we will review IT Governance and other common frameworks for IT. You will leave armed with knowledge to speak intelligently with your IT Department and Colleagues. |
