MS Access as a COOL CAAT for Data Mining: Basic

Yes!  We all agree that auditors DO use Excel as an audit tool. But how many auditors use MS Access??? (About 2% do.)  Have you seen the capabilities in Access? Let’s debunk some false notions:

  • False notion #1: Access cannot hold a lot of records. Not true. You can get millions of records in the newest Access.
  • False Notion #2: Access doesn’t have the bells of “audit software”. Not true. By using the wizards and some fascinating third-party inexpensive add-ins, you may achieve a ton of robust audit functionality. These add-ins perform all those tests that auditors like to do (like a sequence check). Besides, Access has some great wizards which perform audit procedures (think 3-way unmatched tests and duplicates/nth-licates)
  • False notion #3: Access cannot handle various data formats. Not true. You can download varied data formats … from Oracle to delimited to CSV to fixed-width to ODBC.

And … HERE’S THE BEST PART … Access doesn’t cost $3,000 per copy … per year … for-ever! (YIKES).

Oh, by the way, when you write queries in Access, you are NOT making new tables (the results are virtual tables, with pointers), so your queries aren’t space-hogs, like some other software.

Finally, the reporting capabilities of Access are beautiful (think camera-ready reports).

THIS CLASS IS 100% HANDS-ON, WITH SEVERAL COMPUTERIZED CASES. WE CAN TEACH BOTH OFFICE 97-2003 AND 2007.
